EA reveal the first details on Battlefield's entry into the next-generation...
Having recently confirmed the development of Battlefield: Modern Combat for the Playstation2, Digital Illusions today confirmed that Battlefield 2 is currently in development for the PC.
Scheduled for release in Spring 2005, Battlefield 2 makes use of an entirely new game engine, claimed to usher in the next-generation of PC online battlefield gaming. Whilst the sequel is being developed to be distinctly different from the forthcoming PS2 title, players will find the same three superpowers (the United States, the Chinese or the newly formed Middle East Coalition) featured within Battlefield 2.
The game will feature over 30 vehicles to take control of, whilst offering the prospect of over 100 people playing in some of the largest online battles ever to appear on the PC.
In addition the all-new engine allows for a host of new features, including fully destructible environments; whilst each map within the game adjusts in scale to support the number of players in the world, providing the ideal vehicle-to-player ratio and an optimised gaming experience. Additionally, Battlefield 2 all-new game engine features a new technique dubbed â??material penetrationâ??, which despite its dubious tagline, calculates the weapons ability to fire through barriers based on their composition â?“ so players will need to know the difference between strong and weak cover.
Enhanced team play features allow players to enter the action on the frontline as part of a formal squad, or work behind the scenes in Commander Mode to direct the strategic assaults of their team-mates. Success within the game allows players to increase their rank, from recruit all the way to General and unlock awards, including new weapons, vehicle decals, medals and much more.
Weâ??ll have a closer look soon.
