Current-gen tech contract signed until 2014, hints at future console timescale...

Arkham Asylum developer Rocksteady Studios and Mortal Kombat studio NetherRealm have both signed up to exclusively use Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 for their games through to 2014.

Given that Epic VP Mark Rein recently suggested that Unreal Engine 4 will be released alongside the next-generation of hardware, does today’s news hint at new consoles in 2014?

Not necessarily. It’s entirely possible that developers might use UE3 for their initial next-gen releases, and Epic’s recent ‘future hardware’ tech demo was purportedly developed using a high-end update of their current engine. By the same token of course, it’s possible that new consoles could even be released before 2014, with developers continuing to support the old hardware with the current iteration of Epic’s middleware.
