Assassin's Creed sells over 2.5 million copies in four weeks worldwide, with 5 million copies expected by the end of fiscal year...

Ubisoft has confirmed that Assassin's Creed has sold over 2.5 million copies globally in just four weeks, with the publisher expecting that figure to rise beyond 5 million by the end of the 2007-08 fiscal year on March 31st 2008.

The fastest selling new brand in videogaming across the US ever, Assassin's Creed nonetheless widely split the gaming press down the middle when it launched in November.

Yves Guillemot, Chief Executive Officer of Ubisoft, stated: "With the exceptional performance of Assassin's Creed(tm), the fastest-selling new video game intellectual property in the US ever, Ubisoft's teams have once again demonstrated their expertise in creating and promoting major brands."

"These regular-sequel franchises are a source of very high profitability both in the short and long term. Drawing on its strong internal development capacities, Ubisoft is currently in an ideal position to continue to develop numerous new creations - an essential condition for winning market share and ensuring strong growth going forward."

The publisher has also confirmed that it has upwardly revised its financial results for the full fiscal year to 840 million Euros, from earlier expectations of 825 million Euros.

Guillemot continued, "With the exceptional performance of Assassin's Creed(tm), the fastest-selling new video game intellectual property in the US ever, Ubisoft's teams have once again demonstrated their expertise in creating and promoting major brands. These regular-sequel franchises are a source of very high profitability both in the short and long term. Also, even if the comment wasn't spot-on, then it hardly makes its writer a "complete and utter failure in life". That's a little harsh, don't you think? They might be really good at tiddlywinks or something.

I think it's a very apt comment.  The original Assassin's Creed focussed on stunning visuals and lavish presentation, but completely forgot about putting an enjoyable game experience.

Thankfully they hugely improved upon it for the sequel.

This game is a perfect example of what is wrong with game development in this era of next-generation consoles. All the time and money is spent on graphics, neglecting the development of gameplay. Repetively tedious and tediously repetitive, this game is an absolute insult to the consumer and gamer. The developers should not be rewarded for producing this abomination. Don't buy it.
