Following speculative reports online, Ubisoft has cleared the air surrounding the future of its Assassin's Creed series...
Speaking during a post-investor conference call following the company's Q1 financial results, Ubisoft CFO Alain Martinez has rejected speculative reports indicating that there won't be a new Assassin's Creed game released next year.
"There has been an interview with somebody in the production team about it," Martinez said of reports that emerged last week. "I think that the gentleman mentioned that the decision wouldn't be completely his, and I don't think it would be right to comment right now. So, we cannot say about what's going to be there or not."
"We don't give the pipeline of products a year in advance, whether it's for Assassin's Creed or any other games, so at this stage we don't want to comment that there will be a game next year or not," Martinez clarified. "The comment made by the person that was interviewed was his own personal view, what he thought was appropriate. It doesn't mean this is a statement from the company."
This essentially means that we're back to pure guesswork about when the next Assassin's Creed will emerge after AC: Brotherhood, or whether Ubisoft has plans to annualise the series following the one year gap between AC II and this year's instalment in the series.
With the impressive sales of AC II and pre-order figures for AC: Brotherhood though, Assassin's Creed has now effectively solidified its status as the company's premier game franchise. More as we get it...

Lots of people appear to be experiencing a problem with the latest patch in that it bricks the multiplayer. Users have been commenting about it on the Ubisoft boards and the publisher has asked for patience while it develops a fix...

My guess is a sequel to the PSP game in 2011, then the final PS3/Xbox360 game in 2012 (as people keep saying, for obvious reasons).
Based on no evidence though, just a hunch.

The story certainly spins-off from from ACII, but the city of Rome is new and there are a lot of added features in the single-player game that weren't in ACII. It's effectively Assassin's Creed 2.9.
