Animus Project Update 2.0 is available now on XBL and PSN...
Ubisoft’s second batch of free DLC for Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood has been released, and is available for download now over Xbox Live and PSN.
The Animus Project Update 2.0 features a new multiplayer map and game mode.
In the new Chest Capture Multiplayer Mode, two teams of three players each either defend or capture Chests. The attacking team must locate and capture the chests while the defenders try to fend them off.
Also included in the update is the new “Templar Score” feature, which is updated weekly and based on the users scores of the previous four weeks.

My guess is a sequel to the PSP game in 2011, then the final PS3/Xbox360 game in 2012 (as people keep saying, for obvious reasons).
Based on no evidence though, just a hunch.

The story certainly spins-off from from ACII, but the city of Rome is new and there are a lot of added features in the single-player game that weren't in ACII. It's effectively Assassin's Creed 2.9.
