Ubisoft confirms that another substantial entry in the popular stealth franchise is due out next year...
Geoffroy Sardin, EMEA Chief of Marketing and Sales at Ubisoft has confirmed that another main addition to the Assassin’s Creed franchise will be released next year. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot had already revealed that “there will be something around” Assassin’s Creed in fiscal 2012, but stopped short of providing any details about the game, or confirming it as a full sequel.
“Yes, Yves mentioned it last week in our financials – and more details will be forthcoming. But what I can say is that next year we will have another big Assassin’s Creed game.” Sardin stated in an interview with MCV.
Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood has already sold over a million copies across Europe in its first week on sale, taking the series’ total sales past 20 million.

My guess is a sequel to the PSP game in 2011, then the final PS3/Xbox360 game in 2012 (as people keep saying, for obvious reasons).
Based on no evidence though, just a hunch.

The story certainly spins-off from from ACII, but the city of Rome is new and there are a lot of added features in the single-player game that weren't in ACII. It's effectively Assassin's Creed 2.9.
