Animal Forest Plus is unique, bizarre, innovative, but most of all Nintendo...
Avid Nintendo fans may remember that Animal Forest started life out on the fated N64-DD, more favourably known as the Bulky Drive. Despite that machines failure, the game was released on the N64 in Japan but never made it to the West. <br /> <br /> The game has recently been redone and released on Nintendo’s GameCube, (where it received an extremely impressive 9/9/9/10), and the more that we hear about it, the more we hope Nintendo decide to release this over here. <br /> <br /> Upon first impressions, Animal Forest sounds like Shenmue, but done in a Nintendo way. There’s no extravagant plot, you’ve just moved into a new forest, and must attempt to lead a normal life, interacting with your neighbours, get jobs, make appointments, etc… All of these will affect how your neighbours interact with you, essentially creating your very own Nintendo little word on your Cube. <br /> <br /> OK that description has probably scared off all but the Nintendo fan-boys and those that realise any game from Miyamoto is worth recognising. Nintendo have described Animal Forest as a ‘communications’ game, this is handled by the way the game links up with different peripherals. As with the original, you can save your character on a memory card and take him to your friend’s forest, which will be vastly different to your own. In this way, it’s like visiting another town. This opens up numerous different game options, for example apples may be rare in your forest, but abundant in your friends. Take your character over to their forest, pick up an apple and plant it back at yours. Cultivate it and then you can reap the rewards of selling apples for a tidy bit. With the money you earn you can buy, items for your house; including a NES that allows you to play such classics as Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Kuru Kuru Land, Golf, Tennis, Pinball, and Balloon Flight; clothes, food, pet-food for any pets, there literally seems to be no end to what you can do. <br /> <br /> The characters that populate your little forest are all fully interactive, and your interaction develops with each and every one depending on your actions. So friendships and rivalries emerge over the course of time, could love surface, shack up in front of a cosy log fire? I doubt it; it’s Nintendo after all!!! <br /> <br /> Animal Forest Plus is also the first game to make use of the GC-GBA link-up, opening up a mini game to play on your portable. The game doesn’t require a cartridge for the GBA; you travel to a little island on a boat and can then roam around it on your GBA. The GBA game also allows you to design your own clothing, by designing textures and porting them to the GameCube. <br /> <br /> The game also makes use of the GameCube’s internal clock, so if there’s an event at 8:00PM you have to play the game at 8:00 to see it. Seasons are also directed by the actual time, so your forest will be full of snow and Christmas decorations in December, whilst during summer you’ll have firework demonstrations to go to. <br /> <br /> To add a Pokemon sense of style to things, the game contains over 600 collector cards for you to find. This alone should guarantee it’s success amongst young western gamers. <br /> <br /> Visually this game hasn’t evolved from when it was on the N64, so those hoping for the next stunning Cube game should look away, this game is all about the gameplay. Having said that the visual style is very rich, with bright and bold colours that bring the forest to life in a wonderful way. <br /> <br />
