Alpha Protocol revealed within the pages of one US-based publication; action-RPG described as Mass Effect with a James Bond-style character...

Already working hard on an RPG based on 20th Century Fox's Aliens franchise, Obsidian Entertainment's second title for SEGA seems to have been revealed within the pages of one US mag.

Originally announced as an untitled 'original action-RPG' for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC back in March 2006, Alpha Protocol throws players into the story of Michael Thorton, described as a 'fully trained but inexperienced operative'. When a mission doesn't go to plan, Thorton goes under the radar - the titular Alpha Protocol.

Utilising a conversational system that's a mix of Mass Effect and Fahrenheit (called the 'Dialogue Stance System'), player won't be able to go back to ask the same questions to NPCs as per the usual sort of RPGs. The tone of the conversation is also something that will be under the control of gamers, something that can no doubt be put to good use when trying to weed out some important information...

Alpha Protocol will also be in a third-person perspective, with a close combat system together with what's described as a Mass Effect-style combat - though it'll apparently have elements of Uncharted thrown into it too. Sounding both expansive and ambitious, Thorton will be able to have multiple active missions together with the ability to globe-trot in typical James Bond fashion - and that includes romancing the ladies.

The 'Alpha Protocol' name was trademarked at the United States Patent and Trademarks Office back in October 25th 2007 by SEGA of America.

Sweet! This sounds cool. I hope there is more RPG than shooting.. I like shooting, but some games make non sensical use of it. Obsidian seems to nail RPGs pretty good, although the mechanics to some of their games have not been as polished, their games are good. If they get their technical side of things that had issue in the past, this could turn out realy good. I'll Be curious to see how well they pull this one off.
