Atari Appoints UK Licensing Agent News
Putting the Atari brand back into the spotlight, expect plenty of Mount Fuji t-shirts, mugs, and y-fronts...
By Chris LeytonPosted: 26/06/2008
Perhaps hoping to emulate the iconic use of its logo in Ridley Scott's depiction of a dystopian future in Blade Runner, Atari today announced bold plans to strengthen the brand and put the logo back to where it once belonged.
Confirming the appointment of Rocket Licensing as licensor in the UK of its classic Atari Mount Fuji trademark and Alone in the Dark brand, Atari intends to announce representatives across the world to license both the trademark and peddle the old classics - namely Asteroids, Breakout, Missile Command and Pong.
Rocket Licensing will be targeting the lifestyle sector so expect plenty of new Atari themed merchandise, homeware, and accessories. The UK licensing agent will also throw their weight behind Alone in the Dark with a wide range of products including apparel, figurines, art books, music, and accessories.
Charlotte Hargreaves Senior Vice President, Brand and Licensing, of Atari, says: "The Atari trademark is not only one of the most recognisable trademarks in world, it represents for many people a part of their own history. Alone in the Dark is seen as one of the classic gamers' games. These two brands and their associations have a potent place in the imagination of both gamers and the public in general, one that makes them ideal for licensing across a wide range of products. We are delighted that Rocket, a dynamic, innovative agency, is to represent both names in the UK."
Rob Wijeratna, Joint Managing Director of Rocket Licensing, says: "The Atari logo has had enormous resonance from the era of the first video games right up to the present day and, through games like Alone in the Dark, Atari is still at the forefront of gaming innovation. Put simply Atari has huge brand heritage. That's why we are thrilled to have the opportunity to licence both this classic trademark and this trailblazing games brand."

Is it me, or are games getting worse as the consles get better? Alone in the dark 2 is actually worse than its predecessor, its an insult to anyone with more than 1 brain cell and will make anyone who buys it very angry that they've forked out £40 for it.
