SEGA reveals the first details on its Alines vs. Predator title under development at Rebellion...
If it ain't broke, don't fix it seems to be the mantra for Rebellion and SEGA's Aliens vs. Predator project, which will be the first of three Aliens titles that SEGA is releasing in the coming years (ahead of Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines and Obsidian's Aliens RPG).
The latest of Rebellion's AvP outings will retain the same three-pronged gameplay format of its predecessors, allowing gamers to play as marines, Aliens, or the mighty Predator.
This theme will be carried through into the multiplayer as well, with SEGA and Rebellion catering for "3-way" action in the game's online component. As you might expect, gamers playing as Aliens will be able to "traverse any surface", while Predators will have access to a "suite of exotic weaponry and equipment".
If it seems like we're being brief, that's because this is all the detail SEGA is releasing at this time, although you might want to check out the new trailer and screens, which look pretty good and clearly cast the game in a first-person perspective.
SEGA did release a bit of back-story in the press release though. Apparently, it all starts when a colonist mining group discovers an ancient pyramid on the planet BG-386 (we're guessing it's not called that because they found loads of early 90s computers there).
Unearthing this pyramid alerts "a race of warriors" from many star systems away (we're guessing those are Predators), while a "malevolent intelligence" is awakened within the pyramid (that sounds like the Aliens). Humans will presumably be stuck in the middle of all this (as usual) although they are apparently "armed to the teeth".
"The original Aliens vs. Predator game was a landmark title for Rebellion, and we are both proud and excited to be revisiting the license with SEGA and Fox L&M. Our new technology will enable us to produce a truly terrifying and visceral experience," said Jason Kingsley, CEO and Creative Director at Rebellion.
As was previously announced by SEGA, the game is still slated for a 2010 release although we now know that it will be available on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Sure, there are a lot of people playing MW2, but there still plenty of gamers to go around. If AvP's multiplayer is good enough and the game sells enough copies, then there'll be people playing online for to keep the servers busy. After all, the multiplayer population of the original AvP was pretty resilient.

Mw2's population will drive this game to a botemless pit.The issue is driving my friends and me crazy.

It should do better than Turok in the multiplayer stakes I reckon. AvP games have a long running fan-base for their multiplayer thanks to the earlier titles and there seem to be some interesting modes and features for each character class in the new game. It'll still come nowhere near MW2's multiplayer population though. Nothing will for a while yet...

im going to pre-order this game but freeradical is right it'll probably have the same online population as xbox360's latest Turok which as well in my opinion was awesome.this game will be great.

We'll see, but it's going to take something monumental to rival MW2's online population.
