SEGA announces that the Brothers in Arms developers will be developing a shooter based on the movie franchise...

SEGA of America and SEGA Europe have today confirmed that Gearbox will be developing a First-Person Shooter based on the Alien franchise - days after a disclaimer on the Alien website featured the studio's name.

The announcement comes closely after SEGA confirmed that Neverwinter Nights 2 developers Obsidian Entertainment would be creating an RPG also based on the 20th Century Fox Sci-Fi/Horror series.

"Gearbox Software has a storied history of bringing innovative and compelling design to the FPS category," said Simon Jeffery, President and COO, SEGA of America, Inc. "Combining their design talents with the intense action of the Alien franchise ensures that gamers will have an immersive and action-packed experience."

"The Alien series has been a tremendous influence for myself, the people at Gearbox Software and the video games industry in general," said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software. "The opportunity to work with the amazing people at SEGA and Fox to build a next generation video game in the Alien universe is one of those dream projects that is a perfect fit for our capability and our passion."

The first of the two titles is due out on next-generation consoles from 2009.

We'll have more news shortly...

This is BS - AvP is horrible and all the previous AvP games have been mediocre at best.  I'm so mad about this right now.  I thought the guy in the Gamestop store had lost his mind when he told me "Next Year".  Alien and Aliens need a game of this calibur to bring it back strong.  Pushed out over a year? Yeah right - we'll be lucky to ever see this game.  I will not be purchasing another crappy AvP game.

Listen I really think they need to come out with this game first due to the fact of well what if we do not like AVP ok what then you are not going to put out Alien:colonial marines. I mean ths game is already done why don't you guys just send it out for us to see what it is like and then when you guys get finished with AVP since you guys are not even done making it we might get it if we like that alien game.

Well considering Aliens: Colonial Marines wont be out till 2010, it's an easy choice surely?

I just saw that this game was coming out when I was looking through an Xbox 360 magazine. I think I'm a little torn on which to save my money on, Aliens: Colonial Marines, or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2(By the way, that's coming out November tenth of this year!!!:)!!!)

I hope the rumours of SEGA pulling funding arent true - a dedicated Aliens game is much better then this AvP crap.
