1080 Snowboarding

1080 Snowboarding

1080 Snowboarding is the spiritual sequel to Waverace, using an updated version of its game engine in an attempt to recreate water in its solid form as well as in the liquid form. Well do Nintendo pull it off and create a game that has some kind of ‘cool' factor about it? Yes is the resounding reply.

As soon as you load up 1080 you know that it is not yer average Nintendo game, it simply has the ‘N' cube followed by legal stuff for Tommy Hilfiger and Lamar Snowboards. It cuts to a realistic snowboader going down a realistic mountain followed by a realistic helicopter. Notice something? This game's realistic, it's not and arcade dumbing down of snowboarding a la Coolboarders, but a simulation of it. That however is a good thing.

The thing that most people are likely to do first is have a match race against a computer opponent, this is the basic championship mode. Race against another opponent beat them, and then race the next. You select your championship, easy, hard or expert, from ski passes on a table, the camera pans up and you see five snowboards just chillin' in a chalet. This is a wonderful character select screen, you know Nintendo are on form.

After choosing your character and board you are into a race proper, and it is here that you will notice what is perhaps 1080o's greatest asset, it feels real. That is to say the snow feels snow, when going along you leave a trail, when you turn sharply you spray snow and best of all is gliding through waist deep powder snow, it all feels so very real. This feeling is helped by some very good controls, as usual the analog stick is put to good use and it feels very natural, the ‘a' button is jump, and the ‘z' trigger is crouch, simple yet wonderfully effective.

Like its sister game Waverace, 1080 has numerous options to increase longevity, on top of the one player game there are the usual time trial, stunt modes (complete with halfpipe and air make) and a good two player game. On top of that stuff there is a contest mode whereby you race a course, then do the airmake, race another course, do the half pipe and then do another course. Except in the contest mode you have limited time and have to go past flags in a slalom fashion to get more time, another great addition by Nintendo. Oh and like Waverace, 1080 has some truly blinding lens flare, you have to see it to believe it.

1080 is a very good game, although it has one or two minor flaws that stop it being a classic, firstly landing jumps is somewhat annoying. Most of the time you will land without any problems, but sometimes you seem to fall over when it appeared that you landed properly. Secondly it is sometimes possible to get stuck behind the scenery, although this is rare it can happen at very annoying times and is not something you would expect in a Nintendo game. Lastly the music, it is a bit crap really, mainly because they use repeated lyrics, my advice, turn it off and listen to the great sound effects. However these flaws make this game merely excellent, it is however the best snowboarding game on the market.

Mark Simons

One of the greatest games on the Nintendo 64, a must have for all 64 owners.
